For some years before hearing about Christian Science, I felt that the teachings of the church of which I was then a member did not enable me to practice my religion sufficiently in my daily life. One evening my husband brought home the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which had been lent him by a friend who had been healed through its teachings. As I read the first chapter, on Prayer, I felt this was the truth which I had long sought; and I have since found it to be the "pearl of great price" which Jesus came to tell us about.
I had always received great consolation in times of seeming discord and sorrow by turning to God, whom I had learned to love through the teaching of a spiritually-minded clergyman, whom I had known from my earliest years; but I longed to know more about God, and really to understand that all the promises made to us in the Bible could be applied to our everyday life, if we knew the way. I have found in our textbook and Mrs. Eddy's other writings the "key" to unlock those deep truths which underlie all the Bible teachings; and I have found that when I have honestly and faithfully applied those teachings, they have met my every need. I have many times proved the healing power of this truth when I have been willing to become more unselfed and loving.
From my early childhood I was supposed to be delicate, and was constantly ill with gastritis and other internal troubles. These and many other sicknesses have been overcome by a better understanding of the ever-presence of our Father-Mother God, and of His love to His children in giving them always those perfect gifts from above. But more than for the physical healing, I am grateful for the change in my character. I had a very quick temper, was often irritable and impatient, and was filled with anxiety and worry. These errors have in a great measure disappeared, as the truth has poured into my consciousness and shown me the light. I am now strong and have normal health, so that I can accomplish a long day's work with ease.
