It is nearly eight years since I began studying the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had been married about seven years, and had been ill at least half of the time. One physician had said an operation was necessary; others had said that I needed constant rest, because my children— there were three—were so small, and both health and strength seemed gone. My husband, though having professional training, seemed unable to use it. Lack of everything stared at us constantly—lack of friends, food, funds, clothes, books—everything! As my childhood had been a very hard one and I had early formed the habit of keeping my troubles to myself, no one dreamed how miserable my outlook was.
I had spent a summer in bed in a darkened room, my little ones neglected. Then Science came. Three children who have since been born, as well as the first three, have never had medicine since I found Christian Science. Previous to that I had been a tireless exponent of material remedies, health laws, and study of food values, as far as my means permitted. I am plump for the first time since girlhood. From the beginning of Christian Science study there has been a change in material conditions — sometimes slow, but continually better. My husband is working at his profession again, and making progress. There have been setbacks many, but at no time since the start has our condition ever been so desperate as it was when we found Science. And I would say I have had proofs absolute that when we keep our minds on sincere God-service we can never lack.
The telling of physical healings in the home would require writing a book, but mentioning a few may help other strugglers against the mesmerism of material sense and fear. Last winter my husband had a severe attack of dropsy. It lasted about a month, but he went to his office daily and depended only on Christian Science help; and when the healing came, the conditions were removed in about a day's time. After that erysipelas attacked him, spreading even behind the ears. Again he was able to continue work, and was healed through Science alone.
