DISCIPLES OF TO-DAY

From the October 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN fulfilling his earthly mission of healing and saving mankind, Christ Jesus, the master Metaphysician, did many wonderful works to prove that the power of the Christ, Truth, triumphs over every seeming power opposed to God; and he left many assurances of the ever-presence of divine Love to those following in his footsteps. He said that those who believed in his word would be able to do the works he did, and even greater works; and his immediate disciples, as well as those who followed him for about three centuries afterward, did prove this promise by their works. Then the mist arising from materialistic theology and man-interpreted doctrines obscured the purity of his teachings, until those who professed to follow him lost the power to do his works.

The world has believed that the power to heal spiritually passed with Jesus and his immediate followers. This belief continued until Mary Baker Eddy, by discovering the Science of Christianity and founding the Christian Science church, the Church of Christ, Scientist, proved that the power to heal and save mankind through spiritual means is as potent now as when Jesus did his wonderful works in Judea and Galilee.

An apostle is one who is sent forth, a messenger; a disciple is a follower who believes in the truth of the doctrines of his teacher. Mary Baker Eddy was, beyond question, a messenger sent by divine Love to show mankind again how all may be practical followers of the Christ, healing both the sick and the sinning. By discovering and setting forth the rules of the Science which Jesus practiced, she has proved that, as belief in the doctrines he taught advances into spiritual understanding of the Christ he so completely exemplified, we may all do not only his works, but even greater works, as he promised.
