It is over three years since I came into Christian Science. At that time I was a nervous wreck. I was staying with a lady in Bolivar, taking chiropractic treatments, when I first heard of Christian Science. I believed what I heard about it and was anxious to try it, as everything else that I had tried had failed me. I had gone through one serious operation and had been left in a condition worse than before it. Every function of the body seemed to be diseased. I was suffering from internal troubles, backache, stomach trouble, kidney and bladder trouble, constipation which had troubled me from childhood, heart trouble, throat trouble, weakness, and weak eyes. I could not see to read or write more than a few lines at a time, and did not have breath enough to sing. I was a walking skeleton, weighing less than one hundred pounds. I was a discouraged woman, having two little children to leave in the world, as I thought I had but a few months to live. No one expected me to get well, as I had been sick a long time.
One day a dear friend came to see me and told me about Christian Science and its healing works, and where I could find a practitioner. As it happened, the practitioner lived just a little way up the street. I sent for her to come down one evening, and asked for treatment, which she lovingly gave me. The next morning I went to see her, a much longer walk than I had been taking. I came back to my room and read and sang nearly all day long, just lying down one hour, whereas before I had been lying down most of the time. I was so happy to think. I was going to get well; for I never doubted that I would. I was being completely regenerated.
After taking one week's treatment, I came home to a farm, and began doing my housework, something I had not been doing, as I had been having hired help. I took absent treatments for a while. I worked and sang and rejoiced, and read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy through seven times, along with the Bible; then I began studying the Lesson-sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly daily. I loved Science and Health from the start, and thought it very easy to understand. However, I found that I had to unlearn many things that I had been taught in regard to my relation to God. In about three weeks I left off wearing glasses, as I could see better without them.
