GOOD ALONE HAS POWER

From the February 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE is declaring to the world, with an insistence that will not be stayed, that there is only one real power in existence, the power of God, good. The material senses may persistently suggest that there is another power, the opposite of good, and many may believe the suggestion and become the victims of evil; but Christian Science, firm in the knowledge that God is infinite good, holds to the truth that good alone is real and good alone has power, thus giving the lie to evil.

And what an effect the acknowledgment that good is the only power has on men! It affects their lives at every point; and not only their own lives, but those of every other with whom they come. into mental contact. In the degree that men acknowledge and realize the truth that good alone is real, in that degree the fear of evil is destroyed for them; and as they cease to fear evil, they are able to help others also to become free from the dread enemy to peace and happiness and health. Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 192): "In Science, you can have no power opposed to God, and the physical senses must give up their false testimony. Your influence for good depends upon the weight you throw into the right scale. The good you do and embody gives you the only power obtainable."

Christian Scientists never cease to marvel at the greatness of Mrs. Eddy's discovery; never cease to be grateful for it. To think that in a world seemingly so greatly tortured by the belief of evil, sickness, sin, and death in evidence all around, she discovered the truth that good is the only real power and that evil is a lie —nothing! Little wonder that men were taken by surprise when she announced her discovery! But the discovery had been made; and Mrs. Eddy had already put it to the test. For had she not by the understanding she possessed of the allness of God, good, healed many cases of disease and sin? And had she not likewise been able to protect herself from the assaults of evil? It was only after Mrs. Eddy had proved to her own entire satisfaction that good is the only real power, by destroying the seeming effects of evil, that she made her discovery known to the world, that is, to those in the world who would listen to her.
