TO a large percentage of those entering upon the study of Christian Science, there appears, a great deal to be done by way of correcting wrong conditions in home, business, and social relations; for there certainly is much that is discordant and grievous in the human experience of many individuals.
It is therefore with great joy that the young student learns, perhaps for the first time, or with new meaning, that God is Love and His purpose for mankind wholly beneficent. These divine facts, dawning upon consciousness, lift heavy burdens of fear, rebellion, and hopelessness, the result of believing that God has willed or allowed evil. Added comfort is afforded by the apprehension that whatever does not bless is not of God, and need not be endured. With joyous anticipation the student begins to claim the blessings due him. As he progresses, however, the task sometimes grows into what seem to him appalling proportions, as increasing cognizance is taken of wrong conditions needing adjustment.
Perhaps the office seems dingy and the work irksome; business associates appear unjust, inconsiderate, greedy; home lacks so much to make it livable and lovable, and its inmates do not seem to measure up to the new standard. And so the attempt is made to "demonstrate out" of unpleasant affiliations into those more harmonious, and perhaps easier. Dissociation is sought, and sometimes abruptly, from those in the home or in business who seem unsatisfactory; and association is sought with others who are more desirable. So the student gets very busy trying to change persons and places and things! But, still, this does not seem to bring harmony; and discouragement looms. It is not so easy after all, then! Resentment and rebellion flood consciousness, and the error accordingly seems more and more adamantine.
