Testimonies of Healing

I want to tell of some of the wonderful...

From the June 1927 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I want to tell of some of the wonderful things Christian Science has done for me. In the fall of 1918 I suddenly became very ill with influenza, being unable to rest for a minute at a time. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and in a few minutes afterwards I was resting better. The next day, however, I developed every symptom of pneumonia in a severe form. One night it seemed impossible for me to breathe unless I was propped up on pillows. The loving practitioner worked most of that night for me. The thought came to me that God is Life itself, and that man is made in His image and likeness; then, how could I be cut off from Life for one instant, when I was the very image of that Life? From that moment I could breathe easily, and in a few days I was up and at work. I was with a dear aunt at that time, and she read the Lesson-Sermon each day to me. I never feared, for I knew that as the Psalmist says: "Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. ... A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. . . . Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee."

When I was a little child, I was taken very ill with a high fever. We lived on a farm, and a doctor came to our house who was showing an agent about the country. It seemed necessary to ask them in by the fire, where I was. The doctor noticed me, and told my mother that I had a severe case of scarlet fever, and that as he had his medicine bag in his buggy he would hurry out and get it. My mother told him she would not need his services. When he asked her if she was going to let me lie there without doing anything for me, she told him she was going to have Christian Science treatment. My uncle started to a telephone, twelve miles from where we lived, soon after the doctor left. He wired a Christian Science practitioner, and the next morning I was well, dressed, and played all day. When, in a few days, the doctor saw me perfectly well, he seemed surprised and pleased.

I cannot express in words my gratitude to that dear, pure woman, Mary Baker Eddy, who gave "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" to a tired, suffering world. Thousands of people to-day are reading that book and realizing that it is, indeed, a "key" to the Scriptures; for it is giving them the understanding that God is truly a "very present help in trouble."
