In 1920, when Christian Science was first presented to me, I was a mental and physical wreck. I had been a hospital patient off and on for three years, and had visited a health resort, but received no benefit. Often in the old days I pondered this question: "If Jesus is our Way-shower, as the Bible declares, why is not his method of healing followed? He never gave medicine, but healed all who came to him." Finally I grew afraid of doctors and medicine, and turned away from them. A dear one in my family passed on, and seemingly I was left with "no hope, and without God in the world."
One day a friend came in and asked me why I did not consult a specialist. I told her I had done everything but try Christian Science. I do not know what caused me to make this remark, as I knew nothing of Christian Science and had never heard of Mrs. Eddy. My friend then told me her mother was a Christian Scientist, and suggested that I borrow a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and read it; so I did this. I opened the book at the first page of the Preface and caught these glorious words (p. vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings." As I read the words a sense of peace stole over me; and after reading on for some time I realized that this was what I had been seeking; that this was indeed Jesus' teaching. I bought a copy of Science and Health and went to the church services. I consulted a practitioner, and was told that God did not send sickness and death,—that God is Love.—and that my loved one lived. Soon the wounded heart was healed and the tears were all wiped away. The belief in sin and suffering was lessened, and God's kingdom realized on earth. I realize there is much to learn yet and the way is long, but with God to lead I cannot go astray.
By this revelation of Truth, the Red Sea has been divided for me many times. Chills and fever, measles, neuralgia in its worst form, and many other ills have been healed with the help of a loving practitioner. I have also seen suffering caused by locomotor ataxia healed in two treatments, after the doctors had done all they could do.
