On page 111 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy says, "Leaving the seed of Truth to its own vitality, it propagates: the tares cannot hinder it." I feel that this statement has been borne out in my individual experience, and I offer this testimony in loving gratitude for the seeds of Truth sown in my thought by faithful adherents of Christian Science.
It was about 1909 that a woman came into the reading room of the public library of which I was librarian, and there being no other readers told me of a wonderful healing she had recently experienced through Christian Science, the complete release from a long-endured, crippling disease of the spine. I listened politely, but thought she must be slightly deranged. About the same time I began to hear prejudiced accounts and condemnations of Christian Science, and much scoffing at Mrs. Eddy and her work—the sowing of the tares, just as in the well-known parable. A few months afterward, another woman came in; and in her turn she told me of a healing she had experienced. The seed of the truth of spiritual healing, already planted, was watered; but so also had been the tares of prejudice.
In 1915, I was associated in one of the state campaigns for woman suffrage with a woman whom I greatly admired. One day she told me she was studying Christian Science very earnestly in the hope of becoming a good practitioner. The seed of Truth was greatly strengthened, and the tares of prejudice and ignorance had received a severe blow.
