Testimonies of Healing

I should like to give my testimony...

From the April 1928 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I should like to give my testimony of Christian Science healing and why I became interested in Christian Science. A school-teacher had been telling us for some time that a dear one did not need to suffer, and we said we should like to know how it could be prevented, as our efforts had been exhausted so far as we knew. She said that God could help him. This certainly was something new to us. She continued to give these loving thoughts, and stated that she had been healed by Christian Science. The neighbors gave us a Journal and a Sentinel now and then, and told of their healings. So the light was being reflected. Finally the light shone forth, and the loved one was taken to a Christian Science practitioner. In three treatments the healing was complete; and it has been permanent.

This was the beginning. I had been a semi-invalid all my life. I had tried different climates and all kinds of medicine and doctors. My mother had passed on with consumption when I was only thirteen years of age; my aunt and my brother and sister had passed on with the same trouble, and I was supposed to be the next to go. After my marriage I continued to grow worse, and was advised to take an overland trip from Denver to Salt Lake. I started on this trip but was unable to finish it, and it looked as though I might not be able to return to Denver. But I did return, and after a long, hard struggle I was taken to an institute from which I was dismissed in a worse condition than when I went in. It was at this time that the healing referred to above took place.

I had been reared by a very religious mother, who had longed to find the deeper meaning of the Bible and to impart it to her children. I recognized in the dear one's healing something I had never before witnessed. With a deep hunger to know what had healed this one I picked up the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which had been lent us, and began to read. The first words I read were these: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (Pref., p. vii); and oh, the wonderful light that shone forth in my consciousness! I read on, and in that first reading I was healed of everything—consumption, a sore side of nine years' standing, for which I was to undergo an operation, the invalidism, also salt rheum on the hands; and I laid aside a support which had been worn for years.
