CHRISTIAN SCIENTISTS are learning that business is much more than walking to and fro upon the earth, and trading one material thing for another; that business, rather, is the receiving of the goodness of God, and the giving forth again of this very goodness. It is the continuous and perpetual expression of the abundance of infinite good. It is the process of receiving and giving of the affluence and activity of God. If receiving is part of the process, then, obviously, receptivity is necessary. The thought which is most receptive is the one most used by divine Love. To be responsive to the abundance of God, good, is, therefore, the first essential part of all true business.
The second and equally essential part of business is the sharing of that which we have received. It is an opportunity to express spiritual activity. Man has the power to do this, and can never lose it. It does not depend upon politics, material prosperity, business cycles, competition, or any of the other fluctuating beliefs with which mortal mind tries to frighten the so-called businessman. True business unfolds; and we should look forward with hope and expectancy to this unfoldment. The real man exists now at the standpoint of all right opportunity. Spiritually considered, for man to be in his right place means for him also to be in immediate contact with right opportunity.
There is the opportunity for each of God's ideas, and it is our work to find it through right thinking. We can never find it by milling about in material inharmony; but by rising above material beliefs through spiritual expectancy and receptivity, we awaken to God's plan for us. We thus come under the laws of God, and do not then obstruct the way of progress. To know that man dwells forever in God, reflects His activity, and is in immediate and perpetual contact with opportunity, is to lift a lantern high along the path. God's law of opportunity is continually manifesting itself to the receptive thinker, and is ever available for us to conform to; for the law of opportunity is the law of right, or spiritual, thinking.
