SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING HEALS

From the May 1928 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IT is narrated in the New Testament that many of Jesus' prayers, as in raising Lazarus from the dead, in feeding the multitude, and in divers ways demonstrating his understanding of the truth of being, were accompanied by thanks to God. In awakening his friend Lazarus, the great Exemplar declared aloud, "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always," thus furnishing evidence of his own conscious unity with Life, God; he also proved that Lazarus, as the child of God, and likewise all of "God's children, are Life's eternal expressions.

On page 467 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy emphatically states, "The first demand of this Science is, Thou shalt have no other gods before me.'" Our Leader, who, like the master Christian, demons trably lived in accord with this imperative command, continues: "This me is Spirit. Therefore the command means this: Thou shalt have no intelligence, no life, no substance, no truth, no love, but that which is spiritual." And she adds, "Having no other gods, turning to no other but the one perfect Mind to guide him, man is the likeness of God, pure and eternal, having that Mind which was also in Christ."

This "me" being Spirit, as Mrs. Eddy avers, and man, God's reflection, possessing spiritual understanding, it is obvious that those who would practice Christian Science successfully must indeed come out from among all carnal or mortal beliefs and cease entirely from consideration of a power apart from God, of matter or mortal mind as cause or effect, or as having any life or intelligence. The carnal or mortal mind being "enmity against God," human consciousness must turn from its nonintelligence to Truth, infinite intelligence, and there learn of God, of Spirit and His creation. The discernment of this demonstrable truth, even in a slight degree, will dispel the shadows of material sense, whatever the discordant manifestation may seem to be. Learning of man's eternal abiding with his Father-Mother, divine Love, we rise above the false testimony of mortal mind into harmonious living.
