Testimonies of Healing

That Christian Science heals I...

From the December 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

That Christian Science heals I can gratefully testify. Some fourteen years ago, after trying the recommendations of my physician, which consisted in change of climate and dieting, together with other medical aid for the relief of lung trouble, stomach trouble, and catarrh, I turned to Christian Science at the kind advice of an aunt who had been interested in it for several years. It was on a Sunday night that I asked her what I should do to be healed in Christian Science. She and my uncle read to me the Lesson-Sermon from the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and then said, "That is what you are to do every day from now on, and also to read Science and Health through." That night I slept without suffering, for the first time in many weeks. The next day I was able to partake of food the same as the rest of the family. I discontinued the medicine and the special diet which I had been on for months, and have had no need of either since that time.

On the following Wednesday night I attended my first Christian Science service. It seemed so different from the church I had been attending that I lay awake long into the night, trying to decide whether or not I wanted to attend this church. When I awoke in the morning my first thought was that I was going to do so. Later in the day, when it was time to use the atomizer for my throat and nose, I had no desire to use it—I was free from catarrh. I was learning that God did not send sickness to me. The lung trouble was greatly relieved, but I was not entirely free from the fear of it. I continued studying earnestly each day, seeking a better understanding of God and man's relation to Him. About eight months later I awoke one morning with one of the most severe attacks I had ever experienced. I called a Christian Science practitioner and asked her to work for me. She very lovingly consented, and said she would call me in about three quarters of an hour. When she called I was able to tell her that I was free from all pain and was helping my mother with her housework. She then gave me this passage from Science and Health (p. 376): "The pallid invalid, whom you declare to be wasting away with consumption of the blood, should be told that blood never gave life and can never take it away,— that Life is Spirit, and that there is more life and immortality in one good motive and act, than in all the blood which ever flowed through mortal veins and simulated a corporeal sense of life." I studied and pondered that passage and gained a better understanding of what Life is, and was healed.

I am grateful for these healings and many others since, but I am most deeply grateful for a better understanding of God and His idea, man, and a broader sense of love for all mankind.—
