As a child I suffered greatly from seeing people suffer as a result of injustice, unkindness, and sickness, not being able to help them; and this became much more pronounced as I grew up. I sought the cause of these distressing manifestations and brooded over the seeming failure of God's help. I did not find an answer to this, and grew more joyless myself until the light of Christian Science destroyed these dark phantoms. I had found a new way, which I knew for certain would lead me to the solution of all the depressing problems through spiritual understanding of God, man, and the spiritual universe. I do not boast that I have solved all my problems, but I can go along the way leading to heaven, safely and confidently, as one born anew; for, as we read in Psalms, "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore." All the inharmonies of the material world lose their seeming reality in face of the truth of the spiritual creation, according to Mrs. Eddy's words in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 472): "All reality is in God and His creation, harmonious and eternal. That which He creates is good, and He makes all that is made."
Formerly, the fear of loss of the ability to earn a living for my mother and myself, and of the limitation of my capabilities, often caused me anxious nights. Now I can calmly repeat the words from I Peter, "casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." Yet I know that, even though our Father-Mother God lovingly cares for me, I may not be idle. It is my duty to manifest daily, yes hourly, God's attributes,—charity, friendliness, kindness, and patience, —and to eliminate from consciousness all erroneous material thinking, so that God's thoughts may find room therein. Divine Love has hitherto given me abundantly everything I needed, and I know I shall never lack anything if I obey our Lord's commandment in the Sermon on the Mount, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, went before us, his gaze resting steadily on imperishable spiritual treasures, acknowledging no will but the divine, seeing none other than the real, spiritual man. What else have I to do than to follow this high, unblemished Exemplar by always affirming God's allness, and immediately denying error in whatever form it may appear?
It gives me joy to subscribe for the Journal, Sentinel, and Herold, which are a never ceasing source of spiritual uplifting, and whose messages are fraught with blessings. How unspeakably grateful I am to be a member of our beloved Mother Church, and of a Christian Science Society in which I am an active worker. I think of my work as a teacher in the Sunday school with profound gratitude. In it I have learned to understand Christ Jesus' words, as given in Luke, "Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein." It is my earnest endeavor to be led, confidently, without doubt and anxiety, like a child, by my Father's protecting hand, and to prove my gratitude for His never tiring goodness by serving my fellow-men. —Riga, Latvia.
