GOD is expressed through spiritual ideas, since He is Spirit or Mind. The recognition of God's ideas must, therefore, come through thinking which is spiritual; and thus, through purified thinking we know God, good.
The young student of Christian Science frequently voices doubt as to right guidance with the query, How am I to know what is the right thing to do or say? Such doubt and confusion call for purification of thought. If we desire a clear material view, we set about removing whatever obstructs it; so, thought must be purified or spiritualized that we may see the things of Spirit and be guided aright. Every selfish, material thought or desire is an obstruction to spiritual perception or discernment, just as dust on a windowpane hides the view beyond the window. By the application of the spiritual truths set forth in the Bible, and revealed by Christian Science, we free thought of all that dims spiritual perception or vision. Through enlightenment, understanding, and inspiration mortal thought is cleared of the mists that try to confuse, deceive, and discourage.
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says (p. 254), "When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path." It is evident that if thought is confused by self-righteousness, envy, pride, ignorance, hate, or sloth, it must first be freed from these errors, or we become party to them and are robbed of our spiritual perception. A knowledge of the truth, which comes with close and constant communion with God, exposes the unreality of error; and as clearer recognition of God is gained, mortal mind is proved unreal, because untrue. Seeking daily communion with God, we walk with a spiritual assurance that is not easily moved, for the claims of evil find neither place nor peace in the presence of Truth.
