MATTER UNREAL

From the May 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE teaches that everything is mental, and that the true concept of the spiritual idea, which is known to God, divine Mind, is the truth. All forms of error have only seeming existence as false concepts, and they can appear true only to erroneous material sense.

To say that all is mental does not mean that Christian Science cannot be used to heal what is called physical or organic disease. It means that the first step toward Christian Science healing is the recognition of the mental nature of the malady. When this is first pointed out, one is apt to find difficulty in understanding how solid-looking matter can possibly be described as mental. Yet, how does anyone know that solid matter confronts him? Is it not through mental perception? If the senses were changed, would not matter appear different to changed material sense? Clearly, whatever is perceived must be a mental concept.

In reality, there can be only Truth, God, and God's true spiritual idea; but mortals, trying to perceive the truth through material sense, which they themselves acknowledge to be very far from accurate, do not perceive the truth, but a material sense of the truth, which is a counterfeit or erroneous sense.
