OUR DEMONSTRATION

From the July 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 241), Mrs. Eddy writes, "Take away the spiritual signification of Scripture, and that compilation can do no more for mortals than can moonbeams to melt a river of ice;" and on page 272 she says, "The spiritual sense of the Scriptures brings out the scientific sense." Viewed from this standpoint, the truths of the Bible are seen to be as valuable to-day as when they were recorded. It is a great joy for the Christian Scientist to discover the scientific sense of the Scriptures and to apply to daily problems the knowledge thus gained.

In II Chronicles a battle is described which, when interpreted spiritually, is very helpful in our Christianly scientific work. According to the record, a great multitude was coming "from beyond the sea" to assail Jehoshaphat, and fear ensued. But the threatened people held to the conviction that God had given the promised land to the seed of Abraham. They well knew the assailing foe; for on their way from Egypt to Canaan they had met it but it had not destroyed them. They were clearly conscious that without God's help victory over so great a multitude would be impossible.

While all Jerusalem was turning to God, the spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel; and he said: "Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not your's, but God's. To morrow go ye down against them. ... Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you." Next morning the people of God went out with singing and thanksgiving; and the enemy was vanquished.
