I thank Thee, Love, because, whene'er I gain
A purer sense of Truth, a clearer sight,
I know, compared with what I shall attain,
'Tis but a glimpse of light.
I'm glad for sunlight, stars, and forests dense,
Rejoicing that the truths they would express
Are far more beautiful than human sense
Can even faintly guess.
Grateful am I that strength to work for Thee,
The sense of life and peace which I call mine,
Are promises of that reality
Which is the Life divine.
I thank Thee, too, for every human friend;
For patience, trust, and gentle courtesy;
For all who of their best so gladly spend,
In others' service free;
And, most of all, grateful that this dear love,
Though shown in purest guise of human good,
At best but faintly mirrors from above
Thy Father-Motherhood.
