I first heard of Christian Science when I was about nine or ten years of age. My mother became interested about that time and later joined a Christian Science church; consequently I had Christian Science treatment for physical ills, and as I grew older occasionally attended the church and lectures.
However, it was not until I had graduated from high school and planned to enter the business world that I became sufficiently interested in Christian Science to study it and to realize the truth and efficacy of its teachings. I had nearly finished a business course, but was so filled with fear over the thought of working that I was finally confined to my bed with a severe headache, was quite depressed, and lost my appetite. I requested that a practitioner with whom I had been acquainted for a number of years be called, and when she came and explained to me some of the teachings of Christian Science —God's loving nature and the constant care He was taking of me—and had quoted some beautiful passages to me from the Bible, I felt healed physically, had lost most of my fear, and rose and dressed. With some further encouragement from her, and as a result of my own study and faithful church attendance, I gained confidence, and when a position was secured I was given the strength and understanding to hold it. About two months later a position was secured which was much better than I had had any hope of obtaining. Since then I have secured and held a number of good positions, and have always been glad to acknowledge that they were the result of the influence of Christian Science in my life.
While I was faithful in my church attendance after this healing, and tried to be a better student, it took me some time to realize that I must be a daily student if I was to grow in understanding and experience the harmony in my life which I wished. When I began to study our Lesson-Sermons daily, or else devote some time each day to the study of our periodicals, innumerable blessings came to me. I gained a happier disposition and obtained a higher idea of true friendship.
