SCIENTIFIC PRACTICE

From the February 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

INSTRUCTIONS as to the nature and process of scientific mental practice appear throughout Mrs. Eddy's writings. So definite and comprehensive are her teachings on this subject that one who has made himself familiar with her writings need never be in doubt as to right mental method. Christian Science has been so completely explained and interpreted by its Discoverer and Founder that there remains only the necessity of following its rule in letter and spirit to enable one to lessen and destroy false material sense and thereby enter upon the state of harmony which is the kingdom of heaven. It is the way of Life, and all who obediently follow its behests will reap the reward which the divine Father has provided for the faithful.

In a highly instructive sentence on page 310 of "Miscellaneous Writings" our Leader makes a statement which strikes at the very center of the problem confronting every Christian Scientist. "To impersonalize scientifically the material sense of existence —rather than cling to personality— is," she writes, "the lesson of to-day." Here in a single brief sentence is placed before us a necessity of the day, if we would progress in the spiritualization of our thinking and thus purify our sense of existence. This purification, however, is brought about not by destroying our material sense of existence, but rather by transforming it.

Whether the effort be to correct false beliefs for one's self or for another the necessity is, always and invariably, to impersonalize the false sense of existence. The belief in a false personality, in a mortal as man, lies at the bottom of all our difficulties. Whatever the problem may seem to be, if we but supplant the false sense with the true concept of man, healing of false material beliefs, of every type of discord, is sure to follow.
