[Written for the Journal]

MARY BAKER EDDY

From the February 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

New Englanders have claimed her as their kin,
But there are ties beyond localities,
And there was that which made her more the twin
Of prophet or apostle than of these.

Elijah's mantle touched her as it passed,
And Daniel shared the courage of his den,
Israel's manna broke her selfless fast,
And John taught her the high art of his pen.

When angels visited her solitude,
Like Jacob she, too, wrestled and prevailed;
Her words have fed the unseen multitude,
Have healed the weary sick and freed the jailed.

She tarried in the secret place, alone
With Him who formed the universe of thought.
Again the blind could see; the mighty stone
Was rolled away; the miracle was wrought.

Of equal lineage with saints and seers,
Routing the myth of human intellect,
She found the Mind which moves apart from years,
And filled the role to which she was elect.

Elect, yea, chosen, charged, and called by name
To shape and wield anew His staff and rod,
And shepherd men, until they rise and claim
Their present birthright as the sons of God.
