IN vivid pageantry the experiences of the children of Israel are portrayed in the Bible. There we read of their idolatry, their desire for the fleshpots of Egypt, their doubts and fears, their many lapses followed by overcoming, their spiritual struggles, and their advance toward the promised land.
On page 583 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy defines "children of Israel" in part as "the representatives of Soul, not corporeal sense." When the Israelites found themselves facing the menacing waters of the Red Sea they had advanced to this point in their growth and were equipped for victory. Defeat should never be accepted nor victory postponed, and we should never doubt that our understanding is equal to the task before us.
Mrs. Eddy writes (ibid., p. 133), "In Egypt, it was Mind which saved the Israelites from belief in the plagues." No material systems could have saved them from the plagues, or other impositions of material sense in which they seemed involved; and no material systems can save us today. Divine Mind alone lifts one above fear, infidelity, ignorance, and physical suffering into true intelligence, righteousness, freedom, health, and harmony.
