I did not take up Christian Science for healing, but to get a more satisfactory understanding of God. I had been taught from childhood that God is a God of love; but when one very dear to me had been a sufferer for many years, although she had been a loving and helpful mother, and could get little relief, a thought of doubt would come into my mind: Could God, a God of love, allow such inharmony to come to His child? I laid aside my Bible, thinking it was not a book for the present; but as my mother wished me to read it to her I would often remark, "I will read it to you, but it means nothing to me."
Later, my sister sent me several copies of the Christian Science Sentinel. These I read and reread, finding I was becoming more cheerful. Wishing to investigate further, I borrowed from the public library a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, as that was the book so often mentioned in the articles I had read. Before I had read very far my aspect of life became more hopeful, and a gloomy disposition left me. It is over fifteen years since I began reading Science and Health. I am still reading that wonderful book, Mrs. Eddy's other writings, and the monthly, weekly, and daily literature which our Leader has so bountifully provided.
My family and I have had many wonderful healings. The one for which I am most grateful is the change in thought due to knowledge of God and man's relationship to Him. I have had healings of many bodily ailments, such as burns, colds, pneumonia, ptomaine poisoning, the last being healed in one day; whereas before I came into Christian Science the same trouble was not overcome for weeks. I have been healed of sorrow over the passing on of a dear one. My daughter has been healed of severe kidney disease and eye trouble. I have seen healings of broken bones, tuberculosis, neuritis, lack of supply, and other discords.
