Testimonies of Healing

I first became interested in Christian Science...

From the June 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I first became interested in Christian Science through the healing of a very severe cold. I had always been subject to these colds and, since my father was a druggist, every known material remedy had been tried. I knew from experience that though a drug might appear for a time to be effective, it soon lost its seeming effect. And no material remedy had ever caused a cold to vanish instantly, as had Christian Science in my first experience with it. This incident made me want to know what Christian Science is, and I began to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. My family were stanch members of an orthodox church; and I was very happy in the social life of this church, so there was no desire for anything different. However, I found that there were many questions that went unanswered, and in my study of Christian Science I began to find answers to them. I learned that there is a religion that is logical, and does not reply to many questions, "That is something we are not supposed to understand."

Since that time, over twenty years ago, I have experienced and observed many healings. One healing in particular was very convincing to me. Our small son, then four years old, was struck down by an automobile. The physicians pronounced a verdict of a fractured skull, probably with concussion of the brain. However, the truth was declared, and things were going well, when one who was very much devoted to the little fellow, but who was not a Christian Scientist, was allowed to see him, and immediately declared the child would never live. This statement then appeared so apparently true that we became very much discouraged, and the child lapsed into a state of unconsciousness from which we were unable to arouse him.

The practitioner lived in a distant city, but came in response to our urgent call. She stepped into the house with comfort and assurance in her words. In reply to the statement that there was so much erroneous thought about us, she said, "There is no reality to any but good thoughts, and so if you think people are thinking things they should not, you can just know the thoughts are not real." Each erroneous concept was met and destroyed in the same loving way, and in an hour from the time the practitioner came into the house the child was talking to her rationally. This was on a Sunday. He had been struck on Thursday, and had not been entirely conscious at any time since then. The following day, Monday, he was up, and on Tuesday he played all day from morning until night with scarcely a rest. The healing was complete. We learned later that a neighbor had telephoned the physician's house for word of the boy's condition, and a member of the physician's family had informed her that the doctor had very little hope for his recovery.
