It was due to our making the acquaintance of some people who were living up to the teachings of Christian Science to a marked degree that we became interested in this truth during a summer vacation a number of years ago. The more we heard of this religion and saw it lived by these friends, the more interested we became, and the first time anything went amiss with us we turned to it for healing. This was a surprising concession on the part of my mother, as she feared disease exceedingly and always carried a doctor's book and case of homeopathic remedies whenever we went away from home and were, therefore, out of touch with our family physician. The physical difficulty, though acute, was met almost instantaneously through the loving help of one of these friends; and thereafter we never depended on material means for healing, as we were thoroughly convinced that God was the great Physician.
My mother's dread of sickness had been, however, not without reason, for from babyhood I had been considered very delicate and the chances of my living to grow up were thought to be slight. I contracted nearly every disease then "popular," and in a serious form, almost passing on several times; so that I was a source of constant anxiety to my parents. I never knew what it was to have any uninterrupted schooling. Being compelled to be absent because of some phase of illness perhaps from a few days or weeks to as much as half a year at a time, I was almost always having to make up school work, and this made my school life more or less of a struggle until we turned to Christian Science. As I had suffered so much from sickness, my family and I were in a position to appreciate the uniform good health I enjoyed after we found Christian Science.
Tonsillitis had been chronic with me all my life, one or more attacks of it occurring every year. The first time it manifested itself after we learned of Christian Science a practitioner was called, and it was destroyed in two or three days, when I was able to return to school instead of having the usual absence of two weeks or longer. This experience was so encouraging to us that each time there came a need we called upon a practitioner for help, and, always receiving it, we continued to do so until we were well enough grounded in the understanding of Christian Science to meet many of our problems ourselves. Many healings were received along many lines and our outlook was greatly changed, becoming happier and more kindly.
