Shortly after taking up the study of Christian Science, I contracted smallpox. Feeling that my understanding was insufficient to meet the case, I called on a practitioner for help, which was lovingly given. A doctor diagnosed the case. This doctor was friendly to Christian Science and knew that I was having Christian Science care. I shall never forget his words of assurance: "Don't be afraid; Principle will take care of you!" And divine Principle did take care of me very lovingly. The complete healing was slow, but it left me with almost none of the marks which this ailment is supposed often to leave. I was afterward told that I was fortunate, as it frequently proved fatal to one of my age.
I was working for a large concern at the time, and feeling was quite strong against me as the entire force had to submit to vaccination. The practitioner took this up also, with the result that not only was my position held for me, but when I was able to go to work again a better position was given me. My mother and my little son went through quarantine with me but did not contract the disease, as they had protective work done for them in Christian Science. The somewhat slow healing was a blessing, as it gave me time to study and I received a better understanding.
Another outstanding healing for which I am very grateful is that of diphtheria. My son had this in its worst form and it left him in a helpless condition, as his sight failed him and he could not walk. It was a clear case of antitoxin paralysis. A doctor who had been called without my knowledge, gave him a double dose of antitoxin serum, which caused the paralysis. He was entirely healed in about seven weeks, and was as strong and hearty as ever. This healing was a marvel to all who saw him before and after he was healed. Many who had seen him said he might never entirely recover from the condition.
