THE beloved John records Jesus as having stated to his disciples, "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now." The Master did not leave them comfortless; he definitely promised that the Comforter should come. Christian Scientists understand that the revelation of Truth given to the world by Mary Baker Eddy in her writings is the promised Comforter which has come in fulfillment of Jesus' prophecy.
Jesus' great life-work proved that it is our God-given right to be well and happy, and to have our every human need supplied. For the protection of this divine heritage the Master gave an important rule, which reads, "What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch." This Christian watching demands alertness. It is an appeal to mortals to waken from the dream of life in matter, and to set their affections on things above—to recognize spirituality as the basis of real existence.
Christian Science has come to teach mankind how to defend their heritage of freedom. In her Dedicatory Sermon delivered January 6, 1895, Mrs. Eddy used a striking illustration in order to teach her students how to defend their heritage. She said (Pulpit and Press, p. 2): "Imagine yourselves in a poorly barricaded fort, fiercely besieged by the enemy. Would you rush forth single-handed to combat the foe? Nay, would you not rather strengthen your citadel by every means in your power, and remain within the walls for its defense? Likewise should we do as metaphysicians and Christian Scientists."
