About twenty-two years ago I had reached "man's extremity," and it proved my opportunity to find God. I had suffered all my life with nervous sick headaches, and had a very badly diseased throat. I had submitted to an operation and had my tonsils removed, but I was not healed. The physician said it was tubercular. I was also suffering intensely from sciatic rheumatism, and was told by the physician that he could not heal me.
I had been taught that God sends disease and suffering for some good, and that I must bear it bravely. This did not enable me to love God, but caused me to fear Him and turn from Him. In my heart I was searching for a loving God who heals and saves. Then I found Christian Science, which teaches that God heals and saves here and now.
I did not expect to be healed, for I had been thoroughly convinced that I was afflicted with an incurable disease. However, as my concept of God was changed, and I learned that He is infinite Love, eternal Life, divine Mind, and began to get a glimpse of the real man as God's reflection, these false beliefs about God and man were replaced by the truth; and the healing came as a natural consequence. Jesus said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
