THE REAL AND THE UNREAL

[Original article in German]

From the June 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE attaches great importance to the expression of gratitude in the lives of its adherents; for, according to their nature, love and gratitude cannot be separated: and love is the supreme demand of Christian Science.

But what in general of humanity's gratitude to God? Only a small number ever consider that they owe Him gratitude. Yet how great is the measure they experience daily—yes, hourly—of His love and care! Were they but to meditate upon this good, and realize with what an abundance of it they are blessed, they would regret that they had hitherto accepted His gracious gifts so indifferently, and so much as a matter of course.

The sun shines kindly on all, blessing everyone. The clouds sail in beauty across the sky; the moon and stars illumine it wondrously at night. And beneath is stretched the earth, with all its varying beauty according to the season. In view of this, even though these be only the semblance of Mind's creation, should not everyone have the desire to express gratitude and to do something in response? All that we call our own belongs to God; and so we cannot offer Him less than our hearts, our love, our obedience, and our gratitude.
