ON CHARACTER BUILDING

From the June 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A PARAMOUNT concern of every right-minded person should be that of character development. One may read the biographies of noble men and women, listen to lectures that inspire with wisdom, be appreciative of the best in art and literature, enjoy the society of those who are stimulated by the same purpose —these various pursuits constitute human aids to right endeavor, and provide inspiration for it.

Webster defines the term "character," in part, as "strongly marked moral qualities;" and these are the qualities men and women are endeavoring to express in their building of character; and they rejoice to see them made manifest in their fellow men.

Mary Baker Eddy, in her writings, refers both to human character and to divine character. On page 565 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," after speaking of the "Christ, God's idea," or the "immaculate idea," as baptizing with fire, she says, "The fiery baptism will burn up the chaff of error with the fervent heat of Truth and Love, melting and purifying even the gold of human character."
