Christian Science was first brought to my notice at a time when a member of my family had been given up by physicians because of heart disease. A neighbor lent her the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and her healing began during the same hour she commenced to read the book. After a few treatments by a Christian Science practitioner she was completely healed.
My first healing, which occurred several years later, was of a severe case of the grippe. I had been very sick for two days when this relative asked me if she might telephone a practitioner for treatment, and I consented. Two absent treatments were given during the day. The following morning I arose, dressed, and went to my work completely healed, and for a few days afterward I had a feeling of having been lifted above the earth. But I did not try to understand Christian Science until sometime later, when a member of my family passed on, and I turned to it again for help. At that time there came to me an assurance that I was not separated from this dear one, and I felt a happiness which was beyond anything I had ever imagined. This experience showed me that Christian Science is more than a mere remedy for sickness—that it is the Comforter, "the Spirit of truth," which Christ Jesus said he would pray the Father to send; and I gained the desire to understand and to live it. About this time fears which had always been present disappeared, and they have never returned; and despondency, which had appeared frequently, was overcome.
During the sixteen years that I have been studying and applying Christian Science many healings and interesting experiences have come to me. Financial problems have been solved. At one time when I owed a debt and had nothing with which to pay it, money which was more than enough to pay the debt came from a source of which I had not known. At another time, when I had been out of employment for many months, I was guided to a certain bank to ask for a loan; and, although I was not personally known to any officer of the bank, the loan was granted, and I was also offered a position in the bank. A severe case of influenza was healed, and during this period I was able to attend to my home and office duties as usual. Acute heart trouble has been healed; the pain, which had been continuous for several days, left instantly when Christian Science treatment was begun, and the trouble was healed in a few hours. I had been subject to attacks of malaria in the spring and the fall of each year since childhood, but have not had one since I began to study and apply Christian Science. Sick headaches, severe colds, and acute stomach trouble have been quickly overcome. At one time I was so released from timidity that I was able to leave my home without any thought of separation and take up work in a distant city. A piece of property which had become a burden to me was harmoniously disposed of. A former friendship was restored when resentment and hatred were completely cleared from my consciousness. Some of these healings have come with the help of consecrated Christian Science practitioners, while others have been accomplished through the understanding which I have gained by the study of the Bible, together with the Christian Science textbook.
