Like many others, I took up Christian Science as a last resort. Having faithfully tried medicine, diet, baths, change of climate, and many so-called cures in my search for healing, and not finding even relief for heart trouble, indigestion, bowel trouble, and rheumatism, I was directed to a Christian Science practitioner. The latter pointed out a few of the truths as taught in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which in a few hours practically lifted me out of the grave. For several weeks I had lived on malted milk and Graham crackers, but had suffered in spite of this rigid diet. My first breakfast after my visit to the practitioner consisted of hot cakes and syrup, and I continued to eat whatever was set on the table. The indigestion and suffering were all gone. Within six weeks I had gained thirty pounds. Bowel trouble was healed as quickly; palpitation of the heart was overcome in a few days. The rheumatism did not yield entirely at this time, but I was so much better that I helped harvest a hay crop, pitching the hay on to the wagon. Since then it has been possible for me to be on my feet eighteen hours a day for a period of six weeks; and I now find it possible to do my work without inconvenience in this respect.
Before coming into Christian Science it seemed almost impossible at times for me to walk two or three blocks. For this healing alone my heart goes out to God in praise, and in love to that noble woman, Mrs. Eddy, who discovered Christian Science and gave it to mankind. I also owe a deep debt of gratitude to the faithful practitioners who have pointed out the way from time to time. In order to complete my healing it was found necessary for me to overcome, to a great extent, a quick temper, criticism, self-love, and self-condemnation. At first I was quite resentful that my healing was slow, but now I am glad of it, because I have had to study and prove the truth.
At first I did not see the necessity of subscribing to the periodicals, but now I subscribe to them and always find a message to meet my needs or to help me to realize the truth for others. During this period of foundation work I was supplied with the literature by the Distribution Committee, and I am very grateful for the care and thought they gave me. Words cannot express my gratitude for Christian Science. I only pray I may be able to express it in living the truth.—Kelso, Washington.
