ENJOYMENT OF GOOD

From the January 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN spite of all that material sense may seem to argue to the contrary, Christian Science maintains that God is infinite good, and that therefore good alone is real; and, as a corollary, that evil has no real existence. Christian Science thus stands foursquare in its allegiance to God; and Christian Scientists are earnest in their efforts to prove the truth which has been revealed to them.

What follows from the fact that good alone is real? This, that good is ever present for all to enjoy. As we see this, the truth in the Psalmist's words becomes apparent (Psalms 16), "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore;" and the prayer comes from our hearts that through Christian Science we may demonstrate what his words so simply and beautifully set forth.

Good is infinite, but our realization of the fact often appears to be sadly limited; and it is false material sense, or finite personal sense, which is responsible. It is this false finite sense which seems to tell of lack, sorrow, sin, and disease. In the degree that we listen to it and believe what it says, we fall under its mesmeric influence and suppose ourselves to be the victims of one or more of the forms of evil. Personal sense is never the originator of spiritual joy; on the contrary, it always limits true happiness. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 61 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "We cannot circumscribe happiness within the limits of personal sense. The senses confer no real enjoyment."
