WHY WE NEED CHRIST

From the January 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ON the shore of the Galilean Sea, in the early dawn of a new day, Christ Jesus waited for his disciples. As they drew near, he called, "Children, have ye any meat?" But through the long night they had toiled in vain. The Master then counseled them, "Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find." And we read, "They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes." Thus through obedience to this word from Christ Jesus, reflecting the light of divine Truth, the disciples were enabled to retrieve their vain toil in the dark.

Nor is this help from the Christ a thing only of the distant past, for Christian Science offers proof today that Christ, the divine idea of God, the ever present Saviour, counsels and directs all who turn to it in sincerity, and lovingly enables men to retrieve empty years of seeming failure, to regain health, and to secure freedom from sin. No matter how long has seemed the night of error, wherever the light shines and is reflected darkness is dispelled. Christian Science bids the humble and mayhap discouraged heart in the words of Jesus, "Be not afraid"; and as Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (Pref., p. xi), the Christ-healing is "the sign of Immanuel, or 'God with us,'—a divine influence ever present in human consciousness."

Again, Jesus said, "God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." The ever present Christ is available to all, here and now. The Christ never destroys aught but error, and ever cancels self-imposed penalties when repentance and reform have opened the way. Truth knows no error, and the light of God's love and tenderness shines, dispelling the darkness of error.
