ITEMS OF INTEREST

[As published in the Christian Science Sentinel, April 29, 1933]

From the July 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On October 14, 1931, The Christian Science Board of Directors issued a letter to all Christian Science churches and societies describing the plans for financing and erecting the much needed new Publishing House. The letter stated that "approximately eighteen months will be required for completion, during which time regular payments will have to be made." The eighteen months' period was necessarily approximate, because the enterprise was barely begun.

Eighteen months have now passed, but the task is not wholly completed. The construction of Section "A" could not be begun so soon as was anticipated, because of the delayed vacating of some of the buildings on the site. The completion and occupancy of that section will, therefore, not be accomplished for some four to six months longer. Section "B" is practically complete as to exterior, and the work in the interior of this section is proceeding satisfactorily.

The laminated floor of the Monitor Composing Room has been finished, also the sound-proof treatment of the ceiling of the Mailing Room on the first floor. The drinking water tank, cooled by circulating brine, is installed in the engineering quarters in the basement, and the connections to the drinking water fountains throughout the building have been made. The iron floor on a level with the Monitor presses at the first-floor level is installed. An iron balcony in the Composing Room juts from the stairway wall and is the provision for visitors who wish to view the work of composition. The globe room foundation of steel and concrete, octagonal in shape, is erected in the basement of Section "A" and this octagonal form reaches up through the first floor into the second.
