UNITY THROUGH SCIENCE

From the July 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On page 75 of "Retrospection and Introspection" Mrs. Eddy writes, "The Science of Mind excludes opposites, and rests on unity." The Science of Mind excludes evil, the promoter of disunity. So-called mortal mind is incapable of patterning the unity of divine Mind, for it is devoid of Principle, law, or intelligence. Among other signs of the times it is to be observed that headstrong national policies, to the extent that they are devoid of right and based on mere human will, are sooner or later brought to naught through division between those deputed to carry them out. Error's attempted unity of action is being frustrated through the influence of divine Principle in the thoughts of men.

One of the self-deceptions burdening the human race is the notion that evil practices may lead to good results. War, for instance, presumes to insinuate itself into human thought under the guise of forthcoming peace; but it never has made and never can make good this barbaric presumption. Jesus said: "How can Satan cast out Satan? And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand." It is in human thought that the germs of war are sown, and it is here that they are being uprooted and replaced by the seeds of peace. The basis of peace on earth is the power of divine Principle which eternally governs all creation.

Earth's children are weary of strife, greed, and poverty; they are dropping their broken toys and reaching out for something stable and unifying. In the mental horizon of today we find heartening signs of international cooperation. Nations of the world are being drawn together in frank discussions and earnest counsels tending to ameliorate wrong and to establish right in human affairs. What is this drawing power? Whether acknowledged or unacknowledged, it is divine intelligence, divine Principle, operating through the Science of Mind. Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 124), "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind." And Mind is infinite; hence these properties are operating unhindered throughout the one spiritual creation. The power and peace of spiritual attraction are being felt today as never before, and mankind is powerless to resist them. The authority of divine Principle is triumphing in the affairs of men.
