CHRISTIAN SCIENCE APPLIED IN VOCATIONS

From the October 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

AND he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ."

Whatever vocation one may follow, the goal of success, as viewed in Christian Science, is reached only as each task is performed under divine direction and is made a step in spiritual unfoldment. The word "vocation" is derived from the Latin word vocare, meaning "to call"; hence a vocation is a calling, a summons. The Christian Scientist, whose whole duty is to God, knows that the summons must come from Him. His vocation is, consequently, subject to divine guidance. As he keeps his thought receptive to the commands of God and is obedient thereto, his work will be harmonious, constructive, successful, and benevolent.

Spiritual thinking—utilizing spiritual ideas—solves problems because it emanates from infallible Principle, the divine Mind, God, in whose infinite realm evil is nonexistent. Right thinking enables the student to see his fellow men as they really are and establishes right relationships with his coworkers. Through this truer concept of activity he can annul the claims of mortal mind which would thwart, impede, or destroy righteous endeavor. He understands that true activity is mental, God-governed, and hence clothed with illimitability and perfection.
