SPIRITUAL REALITY

From the October 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THAT true existence is entirely apart from matter and beyond the recognition of the physical senses is one of the fundamental teachings of the Bible. Christ Jesus spoke of this state of being as the "kingdom of God," or "kingdom of heaven."

After his conversion to Christianity the Apostle Paul worked unceasingly to establish the Christian church, "whereof," he wrote to the Colossians, "I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations." Paul described the nature of God, the source of this "dispensation," when he wrote of Deity as "the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God."

From these statements it is logical to assume that Paul realized that because God is eternal He is without beginning or end. Because He is immortal He has no element of dissolution or decadence. Because He is invisible there is nothing relating to God which can be discerned by the physical senses. And because He is wise His very essence must be intelligence. Furthermore, students of the Scriptures may readily note that the preaching of Christianity by the early Christians was indissolubly connected with the healing of sickness and sin. In other words, the overcoming of evil and error through spiritual means was brought about by teaching and prayer based upon an understanding of real existence as beyond or apart from matter and united with God, Spirit.
