THE BUSINESS OF REFLECTING GOOD

From the October 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ON page 448 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes, "It is Christian Science to do right, and nothing short of right-doing has any claim to the name." In this statement the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science makes plain the fundamental objective of her teachings and points out the rule of conduct for every Christian Scientist. It is unquestionably true that to do right is to do good; hence, the business of the Christian Scientist is to do good. This doing good consists of right thinking, which manifests itself in right acting.

Man, made in the image and likeness of God, reflects Him. Since God is infinite good, as the Bible declares, man reflects good alone, and this is man's true business. The activity of good is of God, and He is constantly governing, guarding, and guiding it. Man, then, is always rightly employed, for in good and its reflection there is no inaction, overaction, or reaction. By doing good we fulfill the law, and we receive here and now our reward—peace, joy, happiness, health, abundance, and freedom.

To human consciousness thoughts of good and evil, love and hate, truth and error, may appear to mingle; but in "Unity of Good" (p. 18) our Leader tells us that "to be ever conscious of Life is to be never conscious of death." Likewise, to be ever conscious of good would be to be never conscious of error. Good is now here, and this ever-presence of good excludes evil—anything unlike itself. Because good is now here, evil is nowhere. It is our divine heritage to manifest good alone now; in reality we can express nothing else, for there is nothing else to express.
