OUR LEADER

From the October 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

HUMAN judgment may and does appraise our Leader as a great, outstanding woman, but it is the Christian Scientist who discerns through spiritual sense and demonstration her real individuality, and the spirituality which constitutes her leadership. And what of this leadership? Whither does it tend? What human theories does it forsake, and what new and hitherto unexplored vistas does it open up to eyes before closed? Unequivocally our Leader states the starting point and the goal of this whole mental journey. On "the scientific statement of being," to be found on page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science confidently predicates her spiritual discovery of the scientific real and the material unreal.

With what startling promptness did the early skepticism accorded our Leader and her message answer Jesus' query regarding Truth's second appearing, "Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" Only after years of nameless toil and cross-bearing did our Leader have followers whose thought had become sufficiently spiritualized to grasp and in part demonstrate her teaching. The pioneer work entailed in revealing the Science of divine Mind which opened our eyes she alone fathomed. Then, with what holy faith she undertook her God-appointed mission of teaching and demonstrating Christian Science when God showed her that she was to begin this work!

To the student of Christian Science it is of the utmost importance that he understand the truth in the following statement by our Leader (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 105): "Christian Science is my only ideal; and the individual and his ideal can never be severed. If either is misunderstood or maligned, it eclipses the other with the shadow cast by this error." The above declaration contains no stumblingblock of personality to the Christian Scientist, for he understands that both the revelation of Christian Science and its revelator have appeared in this age in the divine order. Time and again our Leader indicated to her followers that if they looked for her in matter they would lose her.
