Nine years ago, when Christian Science was first presented to me by a neighbor who could see my need, it found me physically weak and in mental chaos due to shock and illness. I had prayed long for relief from this mental condition, and when I was told that Christian Science could help me, I accepted this truth at once and called a practitioner, who came to me that afternoon and lovingly told me that "to those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii)
Although fear and sorrow were slow to yield, I began to be free from such physical ailments as chronic constipation, sick headaches, weakness, and nervousness; and great was my surprise to find that I had been healed of the fear of electrical storms. I had suffered from this fear since childhood, sometimes becoming hysterical.
After a few days' study of the textbook, which I borrowed from the same neighbor, I found that I was able to know the truth sufficiently to overcome a case of worms, from which my small son had suffered since babyhood. He became delirious during the night, awaking us with his screams. Instead of picking him up and dosing him with medicine as was my custom, I stood over his bed in the darkness and declared the truth, repeating "the scientific statement of being," as given on page 468 of our textbook. In a few minutes the child was sleeping peacefully, and he was never bothered by that error again. This boy was also healed of acute appendicitis in three hours, after being carried home from school by boys in his class. Through the loving work of the same practitioner a deep wound on the forehead near the eye was healed, although it would have needed at least three stitches in medical practice. Colds, sore throat, sprains, and many ailments too numerous to mention here have also been healed.
