CHRISTIAN SCIENCE AND THE HUMAN NEED

From the May 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ONE of the most familiar and best-loved statements in the Christian Science textbook declares that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 494). That this truth applied through Christian Science as given to the world by Mary Baker Eddy meets the human need, that is, the personal need, multitudes are convinced. And this conviction is based upon proof established through demonstration. It is not, perhaps, generally recognized that the modifying word "every" occupies so important a place in this statement. "Every" is in this relation all-comprehensive; it implies needs of every kind, individual, personal, collective, national, and international alike. Let us be equally assured that divine Love, righteously invoked through the prayer of understanding, solves all the problems, of whatever form or nature, which vex and harass mankind.

The proof of God's healing presence and power was thoroughly established by Christ Jesus. The healings he accomplished included many types of disease, physical disability, sin, and lack — every form of illness, discord, and need which confronted the people of that time. He even paid his tax with money taken from the fish's mouth. He fed the multitudes without material preparation. Society, it seems, was so little organized in that day that he was not confronted with many of the problems which are now so common. Had there been national and international problems in finance, industry, and economics like those of today, we may be confident that he would have attacked them with the same degree of assurance and with like success, for Jesus above all others knew God's availability and power to meet mankind's needs. His precepts and example were sufficiently comprehensive to justify this conclusion.

Christian Scientists recognize as fundamental the obligation to heal disease and sin, misery and lack in all its forms for the individual. The success of the Christian Science movement is founded and will be maintained upon proof, final and conclusive, that the understanding of Christ, Truth, practically applied, does heal sickness and sin. This is the very foundation stone of the success of the Church of Christ, Scientist.
