THE advancing Christian Scientist step by step must prove his ground, and constantly fortify his understanding by a clearer grasp of the facts he is declaring. He must find salvation practically as well as theoretically; for the vital truths demand assimilation in human consciousness, and this results in demonstration.
Sometimes, faced by this necessity, like the children of Israel in the wilderness the student may be tempted to murmur, to cry out, to desire to return to the old ways, which for the moment seem much easier. None of these courses is open to him. To return is impossible; he has mentally outgrown what he once believed. To sink beside the road in apathy or despair would bring him no nearer the goal; it would not make him even temporarily happier. To leave the path in an effort to find a shorter, smoother route to the truth would be only to procrastinate, delay his deliverance from the wilderness of material beliefs; for while the road is straight, it is also narrow. There is but one way, and one Way-shower, Christ Jesus, whose teachings are elucidated in Christian Science.
In his innermost heart, whether he perceive it or not, each one longs for spiritual peace; and this longing can never be silenced until he finds it. In response to this insistent and universal impulsion, we as Christian Scientists have begun our march in what we are convinced is the right direction, and have entered on the path through the wilderness. Comfort and encouragement come to us on this journey through the "still small voice" of spiritual truth.
