TO SERVE IS TO SHARE

From the May 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

That there is a definite upward trend of human thought is evident today. This is specially seen in the changed attitude toward individual activity. By pulpit, press, educators, and leaders of thought in general, the keynote of service has been sounded. The urge for employment and increased business is not wholly for the accumulation of dollars and cents. The world is gradually learning something of the satisfaction and joy that come from sharing with others that with which one has oneself been blessed.

As students of Christian Science we see in this an indication that mankind is catching a glimpse of the higher meaning of supply. When Jesus said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you," he was addressing his disciples, whose needs were very similar to ours today. Jesus certainly was not conveying the idea that as a reward for seeking God one would be given merely material supply, for he also admonished, "Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life." An understanding of substance as spiritual, gained through seeking God, inevitably is expressed in improved manifestations of purified thinking.

The mortal mind concept of supply brings with it some form of limitation, such as greed, envy, fear, worry, or distress. These negative suggestions are nullified in human consciousness with the coming of the Christ-idea, whereby it is seen that God, the source of all substance, is the only cause, the source of all good. Since it is our Father's good pleasure to give us the kingdom, there is actually nothing to fear or to cause us worry or distress. We have but to accept and utilize what the Father hath prepared for us. In proportion as we do this, we can here and now consciously dwell in the kingdom of good.
