LOVE AT THE HELM

From the September 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is a truism that we are always thinking of something. The stream of consciousness is continuous and uninterrupted. Some concept is being entertained in our thought all the time, and it is now more generally acknowledged that thoughts are outwardly manifested. The wise man said, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." This being true, what kind of thinking is it that banishes fear, establishes peace, perpetuates joy, maintains health—that brings good into our lives and experiences? To find an answer to this question is a rare blessing; yet we find such an answer in Christian Science, which is withal so simple that the humblest seeker can understand and prove it.

On page 113 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mary Baker Eddy has given us this beautiful truth: "We have nothing to fear when Love is at the helm of thought, but everything to enjoy on earth and in heaven." Since everyone is capable of thinking, then everyone has it within his power to conform his thinking to this holy truth and thus enjoy the fruition of such a righteous effort. Our Leader's declaration sets forth a divine fact, and a divine fact is just as available to one as to another. An eternal truth is true for anyone and everyone. Truth is universally true. It knows no frontiers, limitations as to time, favoritism, or partiality. Its adaptability and availability are for all, everywhere.

Christian Science is based upon the eternal fact of the allness and oneness of God, divine Love. It declares unequivocally and proves undeniably that divine Love is the basis, source, cause, foundation, and substance of all life, consciousness, and being. Since God is All, from Him proceeds all creation, all true thought, all reality. God's creation is His expression or manifestation and reflects the nature of its author. It is therefore lovely, and manifests complete loveliness and goodness. An idea is always like its Principle; an expression, like that which it expresses. Since God is Love, and the basis of all reality, all that is true originates in Love and manifests the fullness of that Love. "And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace."
