CHURCH WORK

From the September 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To the student of Christian Science, church work is an important part of his demonstration of divine law. In order to enjoy the privileges and to fulfill the obligations relating to this holy service, it is necessary to understand what constitutes church work in the Church of Christ, Scientist.

On page 583 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy has defined "Church" as follows: "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle. The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick."

A careful examination of this definition reveals two concepts. The first is the absolute, divine, spiritual ideal of Church, "the structure of Truth and Love." This is the perfect creation of God, wherein all that really exists abides in, reflects, and adores Truth, Life, and Love. In this Church there is not an atom of error, materiality, or imperfection. Into this Church there can enter no error or belief of error. In this spiritual habitation divine Mind holds every spiritual idea in perfect relationship, and every spiritual idea manifests its divine identity, expression, and destiny.
