To experience an instantaneous healing in Christian Science, when the one healed knows almost nothing about the operation of Truth in the human consciousness, is to go through an experience not only of great joy because of physical relief, but of sudden awakening to a realization of the presence of divine power, available at all times.
About twenty years ago I was healed instantaneously. My first thought after realizing that I was healed was that the healings of Jesus as recorded in the New Testament must have actually occurred. Then I realized that, although a firm believer in the Bible as the Word of God, I had unconsciously doubted the miracles performed by the master Metaphysician. Now I was experiencing a deep inner joy, not only that I had been healed, but that I had found God to be the healing Principle on which I could depend, and which is available to all. My second thought was that I could sit up, I could walk, and do the things that had been considered difficult for me to do before without suffering. For many months previous I had been confined to bed, as a reclining position seemed to be the only one in which I could get relief from a dull nervous pain in the back. Two surgical specialists were unable to diagnose the case, so I turned to other methods. After failing to receive help from various treatments such as osteopathy and electricity, I consulted an orthopedic specialist. From an X-ray picture he concluded that there was a dislocated vertebra, and performed a bloodless operation or manipulation. This failed to relieve the trouble and from then on I was in a worse condition than before. Added to this was a great sense of depression, as I had tried all remedies that seemed to suggest any relief and there seemed now no hope for help from material sources.
When I finally reached the point of asking a Christian Science practitioner for help I was receptive to Truth. Never shall I forget the joy with which I read the first copy of the Sentinel that I had ever seen! With what interest I pored over the testimonies of those who had been healed by the same power as I had been.
