DEMONSTRATION

From the October 1937 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Noumenon and phenomenon, Mind and idea, necessarily correspond. Phenomenon must partake of the nature of noumenon; that is, idea of the nature of Mind. Noumenon determines the quality of all phenomena. Cause characterizes effect.

Thinking from the basis of the one cause or divine Mind demonstrates harmony in human affairs. In Christian Science one never demonstrates things. One demonstrates Principle or fundamental Truth, and this results in harmonious evidence or condition.

Webster defines "demonstration" in mathematics as "a course of reasoning showing that a certain result is a necessary consequence of assumed premises." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 14) Mary Baker Eddy says: "To be 'present with the Lord' is to have, not mere emotional ecstasy or faith, but the actual demonstration and understanding of Life as revealed in Christian Science. To be 'with the Lord' is to be in obedience to the law of God, to be absolutely governed by divine Love,—by Spirit, not by matter."
