THE FRUITS OF UNDERSTANDING DEITY

From the April 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

SUPERSTITION formerly associated with natural phenomena is being dispelled by more accurate observation. But in the domain of religion, superstition still obtains. Individuals in general grope blindly for a straight course to follow in life, but too often they adopt a zigzag trail. In their struggle for existence and their intellectual absorption, they are apt to relegate to a secondary place, or no place, the spiritual understanding of Deity which towers in value beyond all other research.

Christian Science appeals to thinking men and women whose logical sense reaches out for something that reconciles reason with revelation. It refutes the most pernicious of all materialistic assumptions: "One is not meant to understand Deity." In its ranks are those who have found the way out of invalidism, evil practices, disheartening doubts, dissatisfied agnosticism. Christian Science quickens men's spirituality so that they may understand and demonstrate for themselves the power lying back of health restored, character regenerated, stability gained.

In the book of Proverbs great emphasis is laid on the fruits of understanding. For instance, "A man of understanding holdeth his peace;" "Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding;" "A man of understanding walketh uprightly;" "A man of understanding is of an excellent spirit."
