Prior to the World War I experienced a great deal of discomfort from a physical disorder known as athlete's foot. This disease was greatly aggravated by the conditions under which we lived in the army while in France. After I returned to civilian life, I was treated by a number of medical doctors, chiropractors, and osteopaths, and followed prescribed diets; but I realized no relief from material treatments, and I would often be confined to my home for weeks at a time.
In 1928 my sister received a healing in Christian Science. I became interested, and purchased a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The truth contained in this book met my desire to know God better, and I found in it an objective toward which to work, a satisfaction that I had never before experienced. However, it did not then occur to me that Christian Science could heal my feet, for I felt that this malady was mine, and something I must endure all my life. As I became more interested in my study, I noticed that a catarrhal condition of the nose and throat, from which I had suffered for a number of years, was very much improved, and later cleared up entirely. Other physical and mental difficulties yielded to Christian Science treatment.
The words printed on the walls of our church, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," taken from Science and Health (p. 494) stayed in my thought, and I pondered them a great deal. Also the passage from Psalms, "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever," came to me with added meaning.
